MESA, Arizona – In the 11th annual Golfweek's Best Courses, the editors of Golfweek magazine named Longbow Golf Club to its list of "2009 Golfweek's Best Resort Courses."
"We are thrilled and honored to receive recognition from Golfweek," said Jay Larscheid, General Manager. "I think we all knew that Longbow would garner accolades such as this, and it's truly gratifying to have agreement from one of the golf world's most influential publications. We've simply stayed focused on our pledge to our guests to provide the highest standards in terms of service and playing conditions. It's obvious that this formula has paid off."
Longbow was ranked 89 out of 100, which, at first glance may seem a bit dubious. However, when one considers the caliber of golf clubs placed further up the list – Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Whistling Straits, to name a few – it's clear that Longbow has earned a place among golf's elite resort courses.

Located about 40 miles north of North Myrtle Beach, SC and about 30 miles south of Wilmington, NC, on what once was a former pine plantation is now a 6,000 acre gated residential community. Featuring acres of natural preserves, a full service marina and four excellent golf courses designed by some of the best names in the game of golf.
Hale Irwin's only design on the Grand Strand has the characteristics of a course that would be built for its members. It's a decent and fair layout that has a lot of variety and is well-manicured, won't overpower you with either length or hazards, and throws few surprises at you.
The course has 27 holes - an original 18 by Irwin that opened in 1996 and an additional nine by Tim Cate that opened in 2000. Located almost an hour north of Myrtle Beach at St. James Plantation in the fishing village of Southport, North Carolina, the track consists of the Irwin Front 9, the Irwin Back 9 and The Tim Cate 9. The essence of this tract is its 200-acres of natural terrain, uncommon elevation changes, wide fairways, medium-size, well-bunkered greens and lots of water and sand wandering amid the Carolina pines.
The Verdict: The Members Club was recognized in 1998 by Golf Digest's Places to Play. The Members Course, while not the marquee track of St. James Plantation, is the cornerstone of the facility. Irwin's design is more player friendly and more wide open than the Players Club, and also utilizes Bermuda greens that lead to slower rolls.
